General Profile:

Geographical Location of the District:

The Nilgiris is situated at an elevation of 900 to 2636 meters above MSL .Its latitudinal and longitudinal dimensions been 130 KM [Latitude: 10-38WP 11-49 N] by 145 KM [Longitude: 76.0 E TO 77.15 E]. The Nilgiris is bounded on North by Karnataka State on the West by Coimbatore District and Erode District, South by Coimbatore District and Kerala State and East by Kerala State. In Nilgiris District the topography is rolling and steep.

Area:
The Nilgiris covers an area of 2543 sq.km

Revenue Divisions:
The Nilgiris District has two revenue divisions, six revenue taluks, 13 town panchayats and 55 revenue villages

Blocks:
The Nilgiris District has four Blocks namely Udhagamandalam, Coonoor, Kotagiri and Gudalur.

Local Bodies:
There are two Munipalities, four Panchayats, 13 Town Panchayats and 36 Village Panchayats.

Population:
The Total population of Nilgiris is 7,64,826 (2001), which includes rural, urban and tribal habitations.

Literacy:
Mahatma Gandhi once said, “ Illiteracy is India’s sin and shame and it should be wiped out”. Literacy is an empowerment and illiteracy is the deprivation. The Literacy Rate in Tamilnadu and the District of Nilgiris are present below.

There has been significant rise in the literacy rate. It is evident that the literacy rate has been increased from 81.79% to 89.63% for the male population; the female population also has registered a significant growth from 61.47% to 73.39% in the year 1991 to in the year 2001. Compared to the literacy rate of Tamilnadu 73.47%, the literacy rate of Nilgiris is higher at the rate of 81.44%.
